About Lake Hanyu, Gallery Owner We are in “Fairfax North” in Fairfax, California elsewhere “a gallery” was conceived in September of 2007 in forested Fairfax, Marin County, California, which many artists have chosen as their home. The gallery is located in Fairfax North, the row of unique shopping and dining sites that is now emerging on downtown Fairfax’s north side along Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Fairfax North is just across the street from "Entertainment Row," Fairfax’s strip of live music venues and the town’s famed Art Deco movie theater. Parking is easy, accessible and FREE. (Our Fairfax North neighbors include Barefoot Café, Yeah, Baby, Lola's Depot, Ringseis Designs and Fat Kat Surf Shop.) Why we love Fairfax’s gentle vibe Fairfax, population 7,000, is the last big town in Marin County before Sir Francis Drake Blvd. begins its 15-mile journey through pasturelands and forests to the Pacific. Someone once said that the town “is where wilderness meets the neon.” Adding to that sense of living near a beautiful green edge is the air of laid-back optimism that permeates this place, a sweet throwback to the gentle drams of the 60s and 70s. It seems that almost everybody in Fairfax is an artist in some way. So, how could we not open a gallery here? Local artists were the inspiration for elsewhere’s beginning Over the past 10 years, Lake Hanyu has watched the development of several artists in painting classes at College of Marin. As these painters thrived under the instruction of such teachers as Chester Arnold, Kent Rupp and Bill Albright, Lake saw that many of them were adults who had begun exploring art later in life. “These not only are people who have never stopped learning, their work is of professional quality,” says Lake. “But most of them are too busy to go out and promote their work. That is what inspired me to create elsewhere.”
