About Lake Hanyu

Elsewhere gallery owner and Fairfax resident Reiko Lake Hanyu (“Lake”) is a native-born Japanese who has lived in the United States since 1981.

Along the way she has mastered managerial and artistic skills that have made for a varied career. Lake is currently an office manager for a family business in Fairfax, has also done field administration and troubleshooting for facility maintenance at a biotech company. She also once apprenticed at a lapidary studio as a gemstone cutter and jewelry fabricator.

Other jobs she has held along the way have included banquet server at Deer Park Villa in Fairfax; studio artisan working in the design, fabrication and installation of architectural glass; and sous-chef and baker for a catering/deli business.

“My different experiences along the way have made me open to people from many walks of life,” she says. “That openness extends to art, too. I find that I am interested in all genre of art, which is why Elsewhere has such a varied collection at any one time.”

As a gallery owner, Lake says she is determined to treat artists with genuine regard and respect. "I want to learn how artists evolve to their present creativity. I want to see the world through their eyes and I hope to spend as much time as it takes to accomplish that because we always learn, not only from our environment, but the people we encounter along the way“
