Josie Grant

Josie Grant

I have always known I was an artist and had a supportive family and training in a variety of media since childhood. I come from an artistic home with my father, Lou Grant, a nationally syndicated political cartoonist. I took life- drawing classes with CBS Court artist- Howard Brodie. I won International Poster contests from the Lathem Foundation as a child and graduated early from Lowell High School to attend the SF Art Institute. Here I began a double major in Painting and in Intaglio Printmaking.

I graduated with Honor’s and received my MFA in Painting in 1972.  I began teaching as an assistant in '72 & received my community college credential in '79. I continue to teach part-time in all paint, & drawing media.. I have traveled through Europe, Asia, & South America – studying the Art & Architectural History. I am related to famed Chicago architect Dankmar Adler.

I have taught adult painting, drawing and printmaking classes since 1974.  I was the Chair of the printmaking department for the deYoung Museum Art school. I have a lifetime Community College Credential in Fine & Applied Arts.  I presently teach adults Art though Adult education in Marin County. I have accumulated 5000 hours of documented teaching since 1971. I have been an artist in residence teaching children to paint murals in rural coastal communities.

I have been a grant writer and created public and private Murals in the San Francisco Bay area since 1972.  My Visionary Art oil paintings have been reproduced as posters and distributed internationally.  My paintings have traveled to international exhibits in Asia with the Smithsonian Museum.

For the past 20 years I have been a Board member for the San Francisco Art Commission Street Artist Program where I review and monitor applicants.

I began taking Art classes with CBS Court illustrator Howard Brodie at the age of 13, and started Art College at 15 part-time.  My father is well known cartoonist Lou Grant so I have been surrounded by and involved with creating Art my entire life.

I have been a practicing Artist with a 40-year exhibition record. I created many memorable public Murals in San Francisco and am listed in Who's Who of Women Professional Artists and in Thomas Albrights Bay Area Artist's.

I have illustrated poetry books for Beat poet Diane Di Prima, as well as children's books.   I created my own Mural and Decorative painting business and worked with my grown daughter as  'Up Against the Wall' in 1972.  My murals are in books about SF Murals and I have been invited to international Mural conferences as I have fought to protect artist rights and my landmark case is published in a U.C. book. My murals can be seen in Chinatown and have graced public walls for 30 years.

AWARDS

I received many awards for my artworks since a youth through the Latham Foundation for poster Art. I have had many honorable mentions in group shows and a purchase award with the Ahmanson foundation.  Recently I received grants through the Artist Fellowship Foundation  & the Robert Rauschenberg Changes Fund in New York. I was awarded Neighborhood Improvement Funding through The Mayor's office of beautification for my Murals in Chinatown and Hayes Valley in San Francisco.
